The Journeyman Writer’s Handbook is a series of classes designed to make your writing life more productive, more rewarding and more successful. Unsinkable Story Structure is the second of these classes, and is your guide to using a rock-solid, never-fail structure that will make your stories accessible, compelling and unforgettable.
A mastery of story structure is essential for the Journeyman Writer. Being able to feel the tug of conflict, the balance of a turning point, the weight of an anchor scene, will give you the ability to write more confidently and more quickly. There are, of course, many structures that will work, and an infinite array of variations out there — but at the simplest level, there’s a never-fail, sure-thing story structure just waiting for you. No matter your genre, your style, your experience or your ambition, this is a structure will give you a tight, compelling story, and let your voice, your creativity and your unique magic shine.
Over the course of this two-hour class, Alastair will be your guide as we explore:
- The three-act structure
- Anchor scenes and turning points
- Building a conflict lock
- Pacing and tension
- Where the trouble starts, and where it ends
We’re going to explore story structure by looking at three brand-new stories, each of which follows the same unsinkable structure, with genre-specific variations: a romance, an action-adventure, and an epic fantasy. We’ll also look at other examples, so see how subtle changes in your structure can have powerful consequences for your reader.
This is a two-hour class, presented by story expert, web designer and social media engineer Alastair Stephens. In the downloadable packet, you’ll find video and audio recordings of the lecture, including Q&As from the live audience, along with notes and a transcript of the key points. Those files are DRM free, and you’ll be able to keep them, watch or listen to them as often as you like, and copy them to any computer or device that you on.
