It’s really that simple. You’re a writer because you want to write. If you wanted to design book covers, write cover copy, and meddle with formatting, you would do that for a living.
The digital revolution that has transformed the publishing industry has presented dazzling new opportunities for authors, whether you’re working on your first book or your fifteenth, whether you’re getting ready to make your debut or you want to make your back-list titles available to your devoted readers. It’s an exciting time — but making the most of those opportunities demands time and effort you may not have to spare, and skills and experience you may not have at your fingertips.
We get it. We’re writers, too, we just happen to like doing all the other stuff that’s involved in publishing as well. We’ll do those other things for you so you can do what you do best — write!
So, what do we offer?
Here at StoryWonk, we know stories. We know how they work, what makes them tick, and how to make them stronger. You need an experienced editor who can help you make your story as good as it can possibly be, and we’re here to help. We will read your story, go through it with you, give you advice on what you need to fix, and provide you with one-to-one feedback. If you write romance, women’s fiction, comedy or tales of transformation, Lani’s your go-to girl; if you write science fiction, fantasy, horror or steampunk-mystery-thrillers, Alastair knows what you need. Of course, no matter what you write, we’ll discuss it and bring all our experience and knowledge to the table.
What You Need: A finished manuscript. We aren’t going to help you write your book according to a template; we’re going to help you make the most of your unique voice, vision and magic, and in order to do that, we need to see your story on the page. So finish your first draft, let it rest a while, then bring it to us.
What We Do: We’ll go in using Microsoft Word, and leave comments all over your manuscript electronically. Some will be, “This is awesome!”; most will be, “This needs some work.” But with every comment, we’ll tell you why it’s working — or not — and tell you how to make it better. Every suggestion we make is yours to use, or to ignore. We’ll also follow up with any questions or concerns you might have, so after the first exchange, you can come back and say, “Okay, would it fix it for you if I did this?” We’ll go back and forth with you as long as you need us to, to make your story as strong as it can be.
We offer story edits for full or partial manuscripts. Get in touch, and we’ll talk over your specific needs. That said, we’ve discovered that editing the first 25,000 words of your story — along with a full synopsis — is the best and most cost-effective way to make your story stronger. We’ll fully annotate both the manuscript and the synopsis, and show you how to make your entire book better.
Ever look at a manuscript you’ve read a dozen times, only to find a typo you’ve never seen before? We have, too. The best way to avoid that is to have someone who is not familiar with the work look it over. We’ll go through your prose with a fine-tooth comb, and fix your spacing, punctuation, spelling and grammar, while preserving your narrative voice and style. You’ll receive an annotated Microsoft Word document, and you’ll be able to accept or decline each and every edit. We can’t promise perfection, and nor can anyone else, but we’ll make your book sparkle, and get it ready for prime-time.
Also, if we copy-edit your full novel, we’ll throw in a free conversion to digital formats, worth $150. Sound good? Get in touch, and we’ll get back to you with a quote for your novel.
Your cover is the first thing your reader will see, and it matters. We’ll walk you through the process of figuring out what kinds of covers will speak to your reader, how to visually establish your brand, and then we’ll go to work designing the perfect cover for you. If you’d like your book to be available through a print-on-demand service, we can also prepare wrap-around cover art including spine and back-cover copy.
These are just a few samples of our work — yours will be completely unique!
Got a book that needs a cover? Let’s get started!
Whether you’ve got an electronic file almost ready to go, or a physical book that needs to be scanned and converted, we’ve got you covered. You give us a document fresh from your word processor, a PDF, or even a physical copy of your book, and we’ll give you artisanal, hand-crafted digital files ready for the biggest digital publishers:
You get fewer than two hundred words to hook a potential reader, whether on the back of your book, or your description on Amazon. Lani has been writing back-cover copy for major NYC publishers since 2005, and she can write yours, too. She’ll read your book and discuss your needs and cover concept with you, then give you the copy you need to intrigue and enchant your audience.
Whether you need a print or digital ad to promote your latest novel, your website, an appearance at a convention or any other project, we can help. We understand how to get your point across and catch your target audience’s attention with wit, style and professionalism. Let us know what you need, and we can make it happen!
It’s never been more important for an author to own their digital space. You need a personal domain, you need a professional email address, and you need a place where your readers can find your work. Alastair has been designing websites for as long as there has been a web, and can help you build an online home which is beautiful, reliable and easy-to-use.
